New clinical support tool helps Irish hospitals optimize and scale acute respiratory care for COVID-19 patients
Edited: 03/11/2020
  • Enodatis, a web-based application helps support healthcare professionals with triage, monitoring, and treatment of patients in-hospital, as the coronavirus pandemic continues

  • Tool provides clinicians drafted from other departments with the decision and critical knowledge support required to bolster respiratory care teams

  • The solution – a CE marked, class I medical device – goes from concept to deployment in a record 10 days

  • Enodatis is being rolled out across the Irish healthcare system, following a review of the clinical benefits by the HSE

Dublin, Ireland, 7th May 2020: As the total number of recorded COVID-19 cases rises to 21,772 in Ireland, senior respiratory consultants from hospitals across the country – led by Professor Richard Costello – have collaborated on the development and deployment of a new clinical support tool, designed to help support healthcare professionals with triage, monitoring, and treatment of coronavirus patients.

The web-based clinical support tool for respiratory care of COVID-19 patients is the result of round-the-clock efforts by clinicians and Dublin-based digital health solutions provider S3 Connected Health; supported by The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and The Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (RCPI).

Following receipt of a derogation from the HPRA and the Department of Health, Enodatis reached doctors at Beaumont Hospital, which has the largest cohort of COVID-19 patients in Ireland, in a record 10 days. Three more major hospitals are currently using Enodatis with over 100 clinicians piloting the use of the solution on over 1,000 patients.

Following a successful review of the clinical benefits of the solution by the HSE, Enodatis is now being rolled out to hospitals across the Irish healthcare system.

Professor Richard Costello, senior respiratory consultant, Beaumont Hospital – lead clinician on the project – commented:

“Ireland’s hospitals are working tirelessly and doing a stellar job at looking after coronavirus patients. However, with the number of cases rapidly increasing, we urgently needed to find a solution which enabled our hospital teams to cope with this crisis by optimising and scaling acute respiratory care delivery for all affected patients. And with additional clinical staff being pulled in from other departments to boost our respiratory care teams, we also needed something to provide clinicians less experienced in this area with the critical knowledge and decision support to care for patients."

Fran Thompson, Chief Information Officer Health Service Executive (HSE), commented:

“Delivering digitally enabled safe health care is a key part of our Covid response. The HSE is committed to collaborating with all partners in healthcare to improve patient clinical outcome and experience. The ability to manage and support clinical workflow with a digitally enabled process is crucial to creating a modern health service.”

Martin Curley, Director of Digital Transformation & Open Innovation, Health Service Executive (HSE), commented:

“The development of Enodatis and the speed of collaboration on this project is testament to the team of clinicians and developers from RCSI, RCPI, and S3 Connected Health. All parties answered the emergency call to action and this project is an exemplar for agile development. With strong clinical support for Enodatis, the HSE is working with S3 Connected Health to deploy the solution in the Irish Acute healthcare system.”

Jim O’Donoghue, President, S3 Connected Health, commented:

“In normal service, creating Enodatis would take up to a year, from developing the concept through to deployment. However, as these are critical times, we managed to expedite the process – by building upon our existing Affinial platform, which underpins all our digital health solutions  – and deliver it in less than two weeks, thanks to our outstanding partners. “Digital health solutions are becoming a vital part of today’s healthcare system, and the COVID-19 crisis underlines the importance of embracing digital solutions to improve patient outcomes and facilitate more efficient care.”

What is Enodatis, and how does it work?

The solution – which enables clinicians to quickly and appropriately triage COVID-19 patients using the web-based application on their smartphone – defines a novel measure of patient status called the COVID Critical Care Index (CCCI), and helps determine the best course of treatment based on:

  • The mode of oxygen delivery
  • Key patient vitals, including respiratory rate and oxygen saturation levels

CCCI assessments are repeated on an ongoing basis, enabling Enodatis to visualise trends, track disease progression, assist in the early identification of patient deterioration, and provide timely advice to the care team on the appropriate clinical considerations.

What impact will Enodatis have on the COVID-19 pandemic?

Enodatis is designed to:

  • Help specialist respiratory clinicians identify and triage the patients most in need of their attention
  • Prompt non-respiratory clinicians in the delivery of respiratory care with appropriate data and recommendations to support clinical decisions
  • Provide senior respiratory team leaders with instant oversight of the condition of the patients in their care, helping to treat them and optimise and forecast resource requirements  – including staff and equipment – appropriately

Costello continued: “The adoption we’ve seen from clinicians has been very encouraging; non-respiratory clinicians, in particular, are finding it a very valuable resource. We are also starting to see some interesting clinical data from Enodatis, which is helping us better understand the trajectory of the disease and help plan for future requirements; to have the insight into the progression of this uncharted disease is invaluable.”
