smartQare: Developing an end-to-end digital health platform for at-home and in-hospital monitoring

We partnered with smartQare to develop the digital health platform for a remote patient monitoring solution called viQtor—a wearable device worn on the upper arm. Together, the device and platform are categorized as a medical Class 2a device that measures key vital signs, including respiratory rate, pulse rate, and oxygen saturation. Additionally, it can detect falls, measure skin temperature and activity levels, and determine the user's location in case of a fall.

Initially, the device was designed for at-home, elderly monitoring, but the scope of the project changed when it became clear that hospitals could use the device to access patient data directly on bedside monitoring systems and detect patient deterioration early, ensuring timely intervention. By easing nurses’ workload and integrating seamlessly into hospital workflows, viQtor enhances patient safety, reduces readmissions, and supports efficient, high-quality care delivery.

Project overview

smartQare sought an expert digital health partner to develop a cloud-based platform supporting their body-worn patient monitoring device, viQtor. They aimed to find a partner capable of overseeing project management, requirements definition, and risk management.

During the product development, some elements of the scope changed due to the discovery of new use cases, and requirements had to be refined throughout the project. One use case that became clear was that the device was a good fit for (non-acute) in-hospital monitoring, creating a mid-project shift in some of the features the digital health platform would require. The responsibilities listed summarize the work completed by S3 Connected Health.

“S3 Connected Health were crucial in developing the digital health platform. We relied on their expertise in areas like cybersecurity, front-end and back-end development, and full-stack capabilities. Partnering with an established firm that already had the necessary capabilities in place meant we could bring the product to market much faster than if we had to build an in-house development team to that level.”

Core Responsibilities

End-to-end delivery cloud platform development and digital health solution

End-to-end delivery of cloud-based digital health platform, managing all aspects of the project from defining requirements to delivery, including:

Mobile application
Web portal
Secure data storage infrastructure
Mobile application
A robust and user-friendly mobile application designed for healthcare professionals and approved members of a patient’s social circle. It provides continuous access to the patient's latest vital signs and health status, enabling continuous remote monitoring. The app is built for global use, supporting different time zones and local languages, and includes secure access controls so patients can manage who can view their information.
Web portal
A comprehensive web-based interface offering data insights and monitoring capabilities. Mainly used by healthcare organizations on workstations or tablets, it supports both in-facility and on-the-go use by professionals providing home care. The portal delivers historical trends, detailed analytics, and has been developed for global deployment.
Secure data storage infrastructure
A scalable and flexible cloud-based hosting infrastructure acts as the central hub, wirelessly connecting to the ViQtor wearable device using low-power connectivity methods (NB-IoT and LTE-Cat-M1). It ensures uninterrupted 24/7 data transmission and storage, independent of hospital or home networks. The system securely stores patient data, provides trend analysis, and integrates with external systems like Philips Guardian for in-hospital and future home use.

Maintained a holistic approach to system integration, ensuring seamless collaboration with the hardware partners.

Ensured the platform supported patient monitoring, with 24/7 data access and monitoring capabilities.

Integrated Philips patient monitoring systems to enable seamless data flow into hospital electronic patient records.

Cybersecurity and compliance

Ensured the platform complied with healthcare data security and privacy regulations.

Document-Validation_circle

Ensured the device met ISO 13485 quality management standards.

Navigated Regulatory Challenges

Navigated regulatory changes, including a transition from MDD to MDR.

Continuous improvement and hospital trials

Prioritized feature development

Prioritized feature development based on insights from hospital trials

house-hosp2 1

Adapted the platform for both hospital and home-care use cases.

Support future expansion and scaling

Designed the platform to support future expansion and scaling as needed.

Maintain project timelines

Addressed late-stage requirement changes while maintaining project timelines.

“When outsourcing without in-house capabilities, trust becomes crucial. You rely heavily on partners, not only to deliver what was agreed upon but also to identify and address any gaps in the requirements. S3 Connected Health had to coordinate closely with the hardware partner to ensure effective risk management. Their holistic approach was essential. It’s not just about technical expertise; it’s about ensuring that all elements work together cohesively.”

Results

The solution was delivered on time and within budget and continues to achieve significant milestones, demonstrating its success through regulatory approvals, hospital deployments, and market expansion. The solution is already in use in hospitals, with about 100 systems deployed across Europe and another 100 in proof-of-concept trials. smartQare continues to develop its cloud platform with S3 Connected Health, with an evolving collaboration process.
